Our Dogs
The Program
This isn't a roster. It's the story of a program built around the idea that the dogs who raise the puppies matter more than any pedigree on paper. Every adult in this program was selected - and is maintained - for one thing above all: the ability to mentor.
Why Our Dogs Matter
The Mentors Behind Every Puppy
In the Just Behaving model, the adult dogs aren't breeding stock in the traditional sense. They are the teachers. Every puppy born here enters a social environment shaped by calm, confident adults who model appropriate behavior from the first day.
A puppy doesn't learn “sit” from a command - it learns how to exist in proportion to the world by watching adults who already do. The greeting at the door, the calm response to a sound, the settled posture while the family eats dinner. These aren't trained behaviors. They're inherited habits, passed down through proximity and observation.
That's why who our adults are matters more than what they've won.

Selection Philosophy
Temperament First, Always
Every adult in the program is evaluated on temperament before anything else. Conformation matters. Health clearances are non-negotiable. But the first question is always the same: Is this dog calm? Is this dog confident? Can this dog teach?
A dog can pass every health screen and still not belong in this program if it doesn't embody the Five Pillars in its daily behavior. Our adults are the living proof of the philosophy - calm under stimulation, firm in boundaries, and utterly present without being reactive.

Three Varieties, One Standard
We work with three Golden Retriever varieties - not because the market demands it, but because each line brings something distinct to the program while sharing the same non-negotiable foundation of temperament and health.
English Cream
Lighter coats, broader builds, and a temperament that tends toward quiet confidence. European bloodlines carry a natural steadiness that anchors the program. These dogs often set the tone - they're the ones who demonstrate that calm is the baseline, not the exception.
Traditional American
The classic Golden - warm, balanced, socially fluent. American lines bring an adaptability and family orientation that makes them exceptional mentors in multi-dog households. Their natural warmth is genuine, not performative. These dogs teach puppies how to connect without overwhelming.
Field Red
Darker coats, leaner builds, and a working intelligence that brings energy and attentiveness to the program. Field Reds prove a critical point: energy and composure are not opposites. A dog can be athletic, alert, and driven - while still modeling the calm confidence that defines Just Behaving.
Health Standards
The Non-Negotiables
Every breeding adult in the program undergoes comprehensive health clearances: hips, elbows, eyes, and cardiac evaluations that meet or exceed AKC standards. These aren't marketing claims - they're documented, verifiable, and available for review.
But health in this program goes beyond screenings. Our adults live active, enriched lives. They're not kennel dogs - they're family dogs who happen to also be the foundation of a breeding program. Their daily environment reflects the same calm structure we advocate for every family.

The Bigger Picture
A Program, Not a Kennel
Just Behaving isn't a kennel with dogs. It's a philosophy with a program built around it. The dogs you see here aren't inventory - they're the living embodiment of every principle we teach.
When a puppy leaves this program, it doesn't leave behind a random litter. It leaves behind a structured social environment where every adult contributed to its development. The puppy carries those experiences forward - not as trained behaviors, but as the only way of being it has ever known.
That's the program. That's why the dogs matter.
